Years after Magellan's expedition, the Spanish king sent more expeditions to the Philippines. Most of these missions failed except for the one led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. He landed on the shores of Cebu on February 13,1565 and conquered its neighboring islands.
When the Spaniards conquered most part of the Visayas, they decided to send an expedition to the northern parts of the land. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi sent his lieutenants, Martin de Goiti and Juan de Salcedo, to explore Manila.
The leaders in Manila, led by Rajah Sulayman, Rajah Matanda and Rajah Lakandula, saw through the pretense of false friendship offered by Goiti and Salcedo. A battle took place but the Spaniards had the advantage in terms of their advanced weaponry against the natives. Legazpi took over Manila on June 24, 1571. He transferred the seat of government from Cebu to Manila and became its first Governor and Captain-General.
