Governor-General

The Governor General was the highest government official during Spanish times. The appointment of the Governor-General came from the King of Spain himself. The Governor-General appointed his own civil council and military governors to rule the country. His main duty was to oversee the whole colony and to see to it that the laws and orders of the Spanish King were implemented.

The power of the Governor-General in the country was likened to a monarch. He ruled over the Royal Audiencia ( High Court ) , the armed forces, and enjoyed private privileges from commerce.

The Royal Audiencia was the highest court in the archipelago during the Spanish colonial rule. It was established in the Philippines in the Philippines by King Philip II of Spain in 1583. It had the power to charge cases against high-ranking members of the colonial government including the Governor-General.
